About the Event

Co-regulation: Calming Together - Webinar Wednesday

Facilitated by Emily McKenna

Neuroscience shows us that humans develop their ability to self-regulate through connections with reliable caregivers, who support and model in a process called “co-regulation”.  While co-regulation may bring to mind, infant, caregiver relationships, OSHC children can still be overwhelmed by emotions and need external soothing and support. In fact, even adolescents and adults may rely on attachment figures to get through periods of high stress. Our bodies are designed for emotional regulation and calming in the context of relationships.

During this session we will consider the role of educator emotional regulation and behaviour in supporting children to regulate. This will involve:

  • Understanding the neuroscience behind co-regulation
  • Unpacking emotions and regulation strategies for Educators
  • Providing co-regulation through patterned sensory experiences

Remember, dysregulated adults, dysregulate children. Co-regulation provides a practical model for helping young people learn to manage immediate emotions and develop long term self-control. This relational connection and co-regulation with those closest to us shape the trajectory of our lives.

This session is suited to OSHC professionals at all career stages.

Term 3 sees some exciting changes to our Wednesday Webinars. In response to the changing needs of the OSHC sector we have made the following modifications:

  • 30 minute sessions - shorter, sharper content to overcome the time constraints many services are experiencing that limits their engagement with professional development
  • New supplementary resources for every session including:
    • Training  Plan for Educational Leaders with session objectives, regulatory context, pre reading or viewing options, learning activities and additional resources links. This is designed to scaffold Educational Leaders with supporting their educator team in their on the job training, ongoing learning and professional development. It draws connections between session content and pedagogy and practice, and provokes critical reflection on the important role of educational leadership.
    • Educator Worksheet with reflections and activities for ‘Putting into Practice’ the session content
    • This means that even through the sessions are shorter – you’re not missing out on the important bits

  • Cost savings - enjoy educator team (per service) participation for the same fee
  • New delivery time - 10:00am to 10:30am EST
